A$AP Rocky Brings Music and Awareness to the Dominican Republic

A$AP Rocky became a hip-hop sociologist in his hot video, “Wild for the Night”. His new album Long.Live.A$ap is at the top of the charts and is sure to please hip-hop heads.

Reminiscent of the movie “City of God”, A$ap’s cinematic video exposed the dark reality of being poor and Black in Latin America. These wonderfully captured scenes unearth the social and economic issues in the DR.

In 2005, I visited the Dominican Republic with my mother for vacation. What I saw was exactly what this video reveals. During my trip, many Dominicans were listening to rappers such as 50 cent and identified strongly to hip-hop culture.

Unfortunately “the darker you are the poorer you are” is the case in many Latin American cities today. A$ap ingeniously used his music for cultural exchange and social awareness.

Have you ever been to Latin America? What were your experiences?
